Philosophy of education

- Our students choose from over 135 majors. They take classes on hundreds of subjects and have opportunities to conduct their own research.
- Our students gather information in one of the nation's top research library systems, containing more than 6 million books.
- Our students learn, analyze, and discuss ideas in state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, and research facilities.
The Minnesota student experience
University of Minnesota students take a variety of core classes in humanities, literature, math, history, science, and more. They also take specialized courses in their field of study.
Students usually attend classes during fall semester and spring semester. Fall semester begins in September and ends in December. Spring semester begins in January and ends in May. Classes are also offered between May and August. Most students take four or five classes per semester for a total of 13 to 16 credits. A minimum of 120 credits are needed to earn a degree.
Students typically take a combination of large classes (like Introduction to Biology, with 340 students in lecture) and small classes (like University Writing, with 26 students in each class).
Usually, U.S. students study two hours outside of class for each hour in class. English language learners may need to study longer.
Support for international students
Our international student community finds support through the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office. Its primary mission is to assist international students and scholars in successfully accomplishing the goals that brought them to our campus.
