Tuition and expenses for international students

As an international student at the University of Minnesota, you are expected to take full responsibility for financing your education. If you anticipate not being able to meet the cost of your education and living expenses, you are advised to request a postponement of your enrollment until you have secured adequate funding.

International undergraduates currently pay non-resident tuition rates. Using the 2009-10 rates as an example, the non-resident tuition rate is approximately $15,620 for the year.

Financial certification

Students who will be studying at the University on a temporary student visa will be required to submit a Financial Certification Statement after they are admitted. You will not be issued an I-20 document until you have turned in this form (please do not send bank statements). You will be invited to submit an electronic Financial Certification Statement after you have been admitted. If you would like to view a paper copy of this form online, you may find it at: http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/PDFs/index.html. The University reserves the right to request a deposit in a local U.S. bank before sending you the I-20 form.

For the school year 2010-11, the estimated educational expenses including undergraduate tuition, fees, and mandatory health insurance amounts to $17,580. The estimated living expenses, including book expenses, for the twelve months is $15,020. The minimum total amount students must indicate as available funds on the financial certification form is $32,600. Please see the form for additional expenses for summer school and dependents.

For a complete listing of tuition, fees, and billing please see: http://www.onestop.umn.edu/onestop/Tuition_Billing/Tuition_Rates.html.

After you have been admitted to the University, and after we have received your Financial Certification Statement, we will send you an I-20 form that is used to apply for a student visa. We cannot issue the I-20 form unless you have submitted the Financial Certification Statement.

Sources of financial aid and income

The University of Minnesota offers a limited number of Global Excellence Scholarships for incoming international freshmen and transfer students. These competitive scholarships cover the full difference between resident and non-resident tuition rates and 50% of the difference between resident and non-resident tuition rates. No separate scholarship application is required. Students are considered for these awards based on an overall assessment of the admission application.
