Financial Aid Basics

At the University of Minnesota, approximately 60 percent of undergraduates receive some form of financial aid, such as loans, grants, or work study funds. Most families use a variety of resources to pay for a college education. To assist you with your college planning, we created this financial-aid guide.

University of Minnesota Promise Scholarship

Under the University of Minnesota Promise Scholarship, or U Promise, we have expanded our need-based programs to guarantee need-based scholarships for Minnesota residents with a family income of $100,000 or less.

There are two types of scholarships under the U Promise umbrella:

  • If you are a Minnesota resident undergraduate student who is admitted and your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) shows that you are eligible for a federal Pell grant, then you will receive the U Promise Free Tuition Scholarship, which covers 100 percent of tuition and fees.
  • If you are a Minnesota resident undergraduate student who is admitted and your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) shows that you have a family income of $100,000 or less, then you will receive the U Promise Middle Income Scholarship, worth up to $1,750.
